Why mute videos client-side?

Removing sound from video is an essential editing step when creating website hero video backgrounds, preparing product demonstrations, complying with social media copyright rules, or protecting privacy by eliminating ambient conversation and background noises.

Unlike web services that demand you upload your private footage to a remote server and wait in a queue, this utility rewrites the file's container in your browser and simply leaves the audio track out. The encoded video is copied across byte for byte — it is never decoded and re-encoded — so the result is identical to your original picture and finishes in a fraction of a second even on a feature-length file.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing audio reduce image quality?

No. The encoded video is copied across untouched rather than re-encoded, so resolution, frame rate and picture are bit-for-bit identical to the original. The tool tells you explicitly when a file is copied this way.

How long does it take?

Usually under a second, because nothing is re-encoded — only the container is rewritten. A 150 MB, nine-minute clip muted in about a third of a second in testing.

What format do I get back?

The container that keeps your video copyable: MP4 for H.264, HEVC or AV1, and WebM for VP8 or VP9. Forcing everything into MP4 would mean re-encoding VP8 and VP9 files, which would cost quality for no reason.

Are my videos uploaded to an external server?

No. All processing happens 100% locally in your browser tab. Zero data is transmitted over the network.

Can I mute multiple videos in a batch?

Yes. Select multiple files and click batch mute to process all clips into a single downloadable ZIP archive.

Why remove audio from a video?

Muting is ideal for website background loops, removing copyrighted music, and silencing sensitive background speech.
