How to convert MOV to GIF

Drop your MOV file above. The first five seconds are selected; change the start andend, or play the video to the moment you want and press Start at player position. Choose a width and frame rate, check the size estimate, then press Make GIF. Watch it loop, and download it.

iPhone videos to GIF

Everything an iPhone or iPad records is a MOV file, so this is the quickest way to turn a clip from your camera roll into a GIF — a pet doing something silly, a reaction, a product demo for a README. You can do it on the iPhone itself: open this page in Safari, choose the video, make the GIF and save it.

QuickTime screen recordings

Screen recordings made with QuickTime Player or the macOS Screenshot tool (Shift-Command-5) are MOV files too. They make excellent GIFs for documentation and bug reports, and they stay small because screens have large areas of flat colour. 480 or 640 px wide at 10 fps is usually plenty.

Keeping the GIF small

A GIF saves every frame as a separate picture, so length, width and frame rate decide the size. A few seconds at 480 px and 15 fps suits most uses; shorten the clip or drop to 10 fps if the estimate looks too big. For longer or larger clips, a short MP4 is often the better choice — MOV to MP4makes one that plays everywhere.

Other formats

For MP4 and other videos, use the Video to GIF converter; for browser and screen-recorder WebM files, WebM to GIF. To keep single frames as images instead, use the frame extractor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a MOV to a GIF?

Drop the MOV file above, choose the part you want — the first five seconds are selected for you — pick a width and frame rate, and press Make GIF. Preview the result, then download it.

Can I make a GIF from an iPhone video?

Yes. iPhone videos are MOV files, so they convert directly. Copy the video to your computer, or open this page on the iPhone itself and choose the video from your library. The GIF is saved to your downloads.

What about Live Photos?

A Live Photo is a still image plus a short MOV. On a Mac, export the Live Photo from Photos (File › Export › Export Unmodified Original) to get the MOV, then drop it here.

Why is my GIF bigger than the MOV?

A GIF saves every frame as a separate picture, so it is often many times the size of the video it came from. Shorten the clip, choose 480 px or 320 px wide, or drop to 10 fps to make it smaller. The size estimate under the settings updates as you change them.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF has no sound. If you need the audio, keep the clip as a video — or convert it to MP4 with MOV to MP4 so it plays everywhere.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made inside your browser. Your video never leaves your device, and there is no watermark or sign-up.
