How to compress a video to 25 MB for email

Drop your video into the box above. The 25 MB target is preselected, so press Compress Video Now, wait for it to finish, then download the MP4 and attach it to your email. The plan shown before you start tells you the resolution it will use; after compressing, play the result to check it before you send it.

Email attachment limits

ServiceAttachment limitCompress to
Gmail25 MB25 MB (or less if you attach other files)
Yahoo Mail25 MB25 MB
Outlook.com / Hotmail20 MBCustom: 20 MB
Company mail (Exchange and others)Often 10 – 25 MBAsk your IT team, or try 10 MB

The limit applies to everything attached to one message, so leave room if you are sending documents alongside the video. If a message near the limit still bounces, compress a few megabytes lower — some servers count the encoded size of the message rather than the files.

What fits in 25 MB

Twenty-five megabytes is roughly 210 megabits to cover the whole video. That is plenty for a short clip and tight for a long one. For a typical 1080p phone video the compressor chooses:

Clip lengthResolutionVideoSoundExpect
30 seconds1080p6,723 kbps128 kbpsSharp
1 minute720p3,297 kbps128 kbpsSharp
2 minutes540p1,585 kbps128 kbpsGood on phones
5 minutes360p589 kbps96 kbpsWatchable, soft
10 minutes270p295 kbps48 kbpsWatchable, soft
20 minutes180p139 kbps32 kbpsWatchable, soft

For anything longer than a few minutes, consider whether email is the right way to send it. Cutting the video to the part that matters with Cut & Merge keeps it sharp;splitting it across several emails is another option.

Why compressing beats a Drive or OneDrive link

When attachments go over 25 MB, Gmail and Outlook offer to share the file as a cloud link instead. That works, but the recipient needs access to your cloud folder, sharing permissions are easy to get wrong, links expire or get cleaned up, and some company mail filters strip them. A compressed attachment arrives as an ordinary file that plays in the recipient's mail app and stays with the message.

How the compressor hits the size

It works backwards from 25 MB: room for the sound and the file's structure is set aside first, and the remaining bitrate decides the resolution, so the picture is as large as can still look clean. After encoding, the file is weighed; if it came out over the limit, it is re-encoded slightly smaller. You only get a file that fits. Everything runs in your browser with your device's hardware encoder — nothing is uploaded until you attach it to your email.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a video small enough to email?

Drop the video above — 25 MB is already selected, which is the attachment limit for Gmail and Yahoo Mail — and press Compress Video Now. Download the result and attach it to your email as normal. For Outlook.com, whose limit is 20 MB, choose Custom and enter 20.

What are the email attachment limits?

Gmail and Yahoo Mail allow 25 MB of attachments per message, Outlook.com allows 20 MB, and many company mail servers sit between 10 and 25 MB. The limit covers all attachments together, so if you are sending other files too, compress the video a little further.

Gmail turned my video into a Google Drive link. How do I attach it instead?

Gmail switches to a Drive link when attachments add up to more than 25 MB. Compress the video under 25 MB here and it attaches as a real file that the recipient can download or play directly, without needing access to your Drive.

How long a video fits in 25 MB?

Up to about 30 seconds stays at full 1080p, a minute fits at a sharp 720p, two minutes at 540p and five minutes at 360p. The table on this page shows exactly what the compressor will choose for each length.

Will the compressed video play for the person I send it to?

Yes. The output is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound by default, which plays on every phone, computer and webmail preview. Setting Priority to “Better picture, smaller file” can use HEVC or AV1 for a sharper picture at the same size, but some recipients' devices may not play those.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device. You only upload it once — when you attach it to your email.
