How to compress a video to 100 MB
Drop your video above and press Compress Video Now; the 100 MB target is already set. The plan shows the resolution it will use before you start. Long videos take a while even with hardware encoding — keep the tab open and in front, because browsers pause video encoding in background tabs. The page tells you if that happens.
What fits in 100 MB
One hundred megabytes is about 840 megabits for the whole video. That keeps short clips at full HD and gives long recordings a usable size. For a typical 1080p, 30 fps source:
| Clip length | Resolution | Video | Sound | Expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 minutes | 1080p | 6,723 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 5 minutes | 720p | 2,612 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 10 minutes | 540p | 1,242 kbps | 128 kbps | Good on phones |
| 20 minutes | 360p | 589 kbps | 96 kbps | Watchable, soft |
| 30 minutes | 270p | 393 kbps | 64 kbps | Watchable, soft |
| 60 minutes | 180p | 196 kbps | 32 kbps | Watchable, soft |
Where 100 MB matters
- GitHub blocks any file over 100 MB from being pushed, and warns above 50 MB. Demo videos and screen recordings in a repository need to come in under that.
- Course and learning platforms, content management systems and website builders commonly cap a single upload at 100 MB.
- Sharing over slow or metered connections — a 100 MB file takes a fraction of the time of a 1 GB original.
Long recordings: lectures, meetings and screen captures
Recordings of talks and screens are unusually kind to compression: most of the frame stays still while one person or a cursor moves, so the encoder spends its bits on the small part that changes. A one-hour lecture that would look rough as an action video at 180p can be perfectly usable for following along on a phone. What suffers first at low bitrates is small text on slides; to keep it readable, set Priority to “Better picture, smaller file”, which uses HEVC or AV1 where your browser can encode them — both keep fine detail far better than H.264 at the same size. The trade-off is a slower encode and less universal playback.
If the recording is a WebM file from a screen recorder or browser extension, the compressor reads it directly and produces an MP4, so you do not need to convert it first.
When 100 MB is not enough
If the result looks too soft, the options are the same as for any size budget: cut the parts nobody needs to watch with Cut & Merge, orsplit the recording into parts and send each at 100 MB. For tighter limits, see 50 MB and25 MB; to make a file smaller without a fixed target, theSmart Video Compressor lets you choose a quality level instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video to 100 MB?
Drop the video above — 100 MB is already selected — and press Compress Video Now. The compressor picks the best resolution for the length of your video, encodes it with your device's hardware, and confirms the result is under 100 MB.
What has a 100 MB limit?
GitHub refuses to store files over 100 MB in a repository, and many learning platforms, content management systems, website builders and messaging apps cap uploads at 100 MB. It is also a practical size for sharing a long recording over a slow connection.
How long a video fits in 100 MB?
Two minutes stay at full 1080p, five minutes at a sharp 720p, ten minutes at 540p and twenty minutes at 360p. A full hour fits at a small resolution suitable for lectures and screen recordings watched on a phone. The table on this page shows each case.
What is the best way to compress a long lecture or meeting recording?
Use 100 MB, or more if your destination allows it, and set Priority to "Better picture, smaller file" if your audience uses recent devices — HEVC and AV1 keep slides and text noticeably sharper at low bitrates. Recordings of mostly static slides compress especially well.
Will the compressed file be under 100 MB for sure?
Yes. The finished file is weighed, and if it is over the target the compressor re-encodes it with a corrected budget, up to four passes. If a video is too long to fit even at the smallest size, it tells you rather than handing over a file that is too big.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Large recordings are exactly where in-browser compression helps most: there is no upload to wait for, and the video stays on your device.
