How to convert MP4 to MP3

Drop your MP4 into the box above — or several at once — keep the format on MP3, pick a quality, and press Convert to MP3. The sound track is taken out of the video and saved as an MP3 you can play in any music app, car stereo or phone. The same works for any other video to MP3: iPhone MOVs, MKV films, WebM screen recordings and AVI files all convert the same way.

Convert any video to MP3

A video file is a container with a picture track and a sound track. Converting video to MP3 throws the picture away and keeps the sound, so it does not matter what kind of video you start with — only whether your browser can read it. MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and AVI all work. If a video has no sound track at all, the tool tells you rather than producing a silent file.

Choosing the MP3 quality

BitrateBest forSize per minute
128 kbpsLectures, podcasts, voice notesabout 1 MB
192 kbpsMusic and everything else — the defaultabout 1.4 MB
320 kbpsMusic you want at the highest MP3 qualityabout 2.4 MB

A higher bitrate cannot restore detail that the video's own sound never had. Phone videos usually carry AAC audio at 128–256 kbps, so 192 kbps is already as good as the source; 320 kbps mostly makes a bigger file.

When to choose Original audio or WAV

Original audio copies the encoded sound straight out of the video without re-encoding it, so nothing at all changes and an hour-long file takes seconds. Most MP4s carry AAC sound, which comes out as anM4A file — it plays on iPhones, Android, Windows and Mac, and in nearly every music app. If the video's sound is already MP3, both options give you that MP3 untouched.Extract Audio from Video opens with this option selected.

WAV is uncompressed audio: about 10 MB per minute, but it is the format audio editors, transcription services and some DJ software ask for. The MP4 to WAV converter opens with it selected.

Getting just part of the sound

To keep only a section — one song from a concert video, a single answer from an interview — cut the video first with Cut & Merge, then convert the shorter clip. To do the opposite and keep the picture without the sound, useRemove Audio from Video.

Private by design

Most online MP4 to MP3 converters upload your video to a server, convert it there and send the MP3 back. This one runs inside your browser tab: the video is read from your disk and the MP3 is written straight back to your downloads, so nothing is uploaded, there is no file-size limit imposed by a server, and there is nothing to sign up for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP4 to MP3?

Drop the MP4 above, leave the format on MP3, and press Convert to MP3. The sound track is taken out of the video and encoded as an MP3 at the quality you pick. Save the file, or a ZIP if you converted several.

Can I convert other videos to MP3, not just MP4?

Yes. Any video your browser can open works: MOV from an iPhone, MKV, WebM screen recordings, AVI and M4V. The video picture is dropped and only the sound is kept, so the source format does not matter.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

192 kbps is the default and sounds the same as the original for almost all music and speech. Choose 128 kbps for spoken word such as lectures and podcasts when you want a smaller file, or 320 kbps for music you want at the highest MP3 quality. A higher bitrate cannot add detail the video's own sound did not have.

Does converting to MP3 lose quality?

MP3 is a lossy format, so re-encoding the sound changes it slightly, but at 192 kbps the difference is not audible for nearly everyone. If you want the sound exactly as it is in the video, choose Original audio: the encoded track is copied out without re-encoding, usually as an M4A file.

What is the difference between MP3, M4A and WAV?

MP3 plays on everything. M4A holds AAC audio, the format most phones and cameras record, so it is usually the original sound copied out unchanged; it plays on all modern devices. WAV is uncompressed — much larger, but what some editors and transcription tools ask for.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Your video never leaves your device, which also means a large file converts without waiting for an upload.
