How to convert a video to a GIF

Drop your video above. The first five seconds are selected; change the start andend, or play the video to the moment you want and press Start at player position. Choose a width and frame rate — the line under the settings shows how many frames that makes and roughly how big the GIF will be — then press Make GIF. Watch the result loop, and download it.

MP4 to GIF, and other formats

MP4 to GIF works the same as any other video to GIF: the tool decodes the frames you selected and redraws them as a GIF. iPhone MOV clips, WebM screen recordings, MKV files and anything else your browser can play all convert the same way. Only the picture is used — GIF has no sound. There are pages set up forMOV and iPhone videos and forWebM screen recordings too.

Keeping the GIF small

GIF was designed for simple graphics in 1987. Every frame is stored as a separate picture with at most 256 colours, with none of the motion compression that makes MP4 small — so a GIF is routinely ten times the size of the video it came from. Three settings decide the size:

SettingEffect on sizeGood default
LengthDoubles when the clip doubles2–6 seconds
WidthRoughly ×2.25 from 320 to 480 px, ×4 from 320 to 640 px480 px
Frame rate×2 from 10 to 20 fps15 fps

Footage matters too: a screen recording or a cartoon with flat colours compresses far better than grainy phone video, so the size estimate is a guide, not a promise.

Why 15 fps shows as 14.3

GIF stores the time between frames in hundredths of a second, so 15 fps (6.67 hundredths) has to round to 7 — 14.3 frames a second. Frames are picked from the video on that same 0.07-second grid, so the GIF plays at exactly the speed of the original rather than drifting faster or slower.

GIF or a short MP4?

Discord, Slack, X and most messaging apps play a short muted MP4 on a loop just like a GIF, at a fraction of the size and with full colour. Use a GIF where only a GIF works — email signatures, README files, forums, older chat tools and anywhere that displays images but not video. To prepare a clip as video instead, trim it and, if it needs to be small, compress it. For still images from a video, use theframe extractor.

Private by design

Most online GIF makers upload your video to a server first. This one decodes the frames and builds the GIF inside your browser tab, so the video never leaves your device, there is no upload limit to hit, and the GIF has no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a video to a GIF?

Drop the video above, set the start and end of the part you want — the first five seconds are selected for you — pick a width and frame rate, and press Make GIF. Preview the result, then download it.

How do I convert MP4 to GIF?

Exactly the same way: drop the MP4 file above, choose the section and size, and press Make GIF. MOV, WebM, MKV and other videos your browser can open work too.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIF is a 1980s image format: it stores every frame as a separate picture with at most 256 colours and no modern video compression, so a GIF is often ten times the size of the MP4 it came from. To make it smaller, shorten the range, lower the width (480 px is plenty for chat apps), or drop to 10 fps. The estimate under the settings updates as you change them.

What frame rate and size should I use?

480 px wide at 15 fps suits most uses — reaction GIFs, chat apps, documentation. Use 10 fps for a smaller file when motion is slow, 20 fps for fast action, and 320 px for email signatures or anywhere size matters most.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF has no audio track. If you need sound, keep the clip as a short MP4 — most chat apps and social networks loop a short muted MP4 the same way they show a GIF.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frames are decoded and the GIF is encoded inside your browser. Your video never leaves your device, and there is no watermark or sign-up.
