Split PDF

Break one PDF into several — by the pages you choose, in equal chunks, or one file per page.

Runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.

Choosing a split mode

The three modes answer different questions. I'll choose the pages is for a file that contains several distinct documents of different lengths: type the pages for each file, like 1-4, 5-9, 10-12, or click the page where each new file should begin.Every N pages is for documents with a regular shape — a stack of two-page invoices scanned in one pass, say, splits cleanly at every 2 pages. One file per page is the blunt option, useful when every page stands alone.

Page numbers here are the ones you see in a viewer, counting from 1. A split never drops a page: if you type 1-4 for a 12-page PDF, you get pages 1 to 4 and a second file with pages 5 to 12. To keep only some pages and discard the rest, use Extract PDF Pages instead. Before you split, the tool lists every file it will make and colours the page thumbnails to match, so you can check the result first.

Splitting is lossless

Nothing is re-rendered. Pages are copied from the original into each new document exactly as they were, so text remains selectable and searchable, vector graphics stay sharp at any zoom, and embedded images are never re-compressed. The one thing that does not survive is the document outline: bookmarks are dropped, because page-level copying does not carry them across. Annotations, form fields and external links come through normally.

How to Split PDF Pages Online

Splitting a PDF takes seconds with zero server uploads:

  1. Select or Drop Your PDF: Choose any PDF file from your device up to 100 MB. The file is loaded securely into your local browser memory.
  2. Choose Your Splitting Mode:
    • Split Every N Pages: Divides the document into uniform blocks (e.g., every 2 pages for double-sided invoices).
    • I'll Choose the Pages: Type the pages for each file as comma-separated ranges (e.g. 1-3, 4-8, 9-15), or click the page thumbnail where each new file starts.
    • One File per Page: Every page becomes its own PDF.
  3. Check, Then Split: The tool lists the files it will make, and you can rename any of them there. Click Split into N files. Download individual split documents directly, or grab all generated PDFs bundled inside a single ZIP file.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded when I split it?

No. The document is read into your browser tab and split there, using JavaScript on your own machine. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters because the files people most often need to split — statements, contracts, scanned records — are the ones worth keeping private.

Can it split a 200-page PDF?

Yes. Page count is not the constraint; total size is, and files are capped at 100 MB because everything is held in the tab. A 200-page text document is comfortable. When a split produces more than one file you can take them all as a single ZIP, so even one-file-per-page on a long document is one download rather than hundreds.

How do I split a PDF into files of different lengths?

Choose "I'll choose the pages" and type the pages for each file, separated by commas — for example 1-4, 5-9, 10-12 makes three files. You can also click any page thumbnail to start a new file there. "Every N pages" is the other option when all the pieces are the same length, like a scan of two-page forms.

Do the split files keep the original quality?

Yes. Pages are copied across exactly as they are — text stays selectable, images are not re-compressed, and page sizes and rotation are preserved. Splitting is lossless.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. The tool asks for it and unlocks the document in memory. The password is never stored or transmitted. Note that the resulting files are not password-protected, so re-apply protection yourself if they need it.

What happens to bookmarks when a PDF is split?

Bookmarks are not carried into the split files — pdf-lib does not copy the document outline between documents. Page content, annotations and links to external URLs all survive normally.
