How to compress a video to 50 MB
Drop your video above and press Compress Video Now — 50 MB is already selected. Before you start, the plan shows the resolution and bitrate the compressor will use; afterwards you can play the result and compare the sizes before downloading. For any other limit, pick a preset or enter a custom size.
What 50 MB buys
Fifty megabytes is a comfortable budget for short and medium clips. For a typical 1080p, 30 fps phone video, this is exactly what the compressor chooses at each length:
| Clip length | Resolution | Video | Sound | Expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 1080p | 6,723 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 2 minutes | 720p | 3,297 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 3 minutes | 720p | 2,156 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 5 minutes | 540p | 1,242 kbps | 128 kbps | Good on phones |
| 10 minutes | 360p | 589 kbps | 96 kbps | Watchable, soft |
| 20 minutes | 270p | 295 kbps | 48 kbps | Watchable, soft |
Anything up to three minutes comes out at 720p or better, which looks sharp on phones, laptops and in a browser window. Beyond ten minutes the picture drops to a size that suits a phone screen but looks soft full-screen on a monitor; for long recordings, 100 MB is a better target if the destination allows it.
Why the compressor lowers resolution instead of keeping 1080p
Every resolution needs a certain number of bits per frame to look clean. Give a 1080p picture too few and the encoder smears detail and shows blocks in anything that moves. The same bits spent on a 720p picture — fewer than half as many pixels — look crisp. So the compressor works out how many bits it has, then picks the tallest standard resolution those bits can carry well. Shrinking the frame is almost always invisible on the screens people watch on; blockiness never is.
If you must keep a particular resolution — a platform that rejects anything under 1080p, for example — set it underResolution. The plan will tell you if the result is likely to look rough.
From 500 MB to 50 MB
Phones record at very high bitrates so footage survives editing — a minute of 4K is typically 170 to 400 MB, depending on frame rate and format. Most of that detail is invisible at the size videos are actually watched, which is why a tenfold reduction usually looks fine. The compressor encodes with your device's hardware video encoder, typically several times faster than real time, and if the first pass lands over 50 MB it runs a corrected pass so the file fits.
Getting a sharper result
- Trim first. Removing ten seconds at each end of a one-minute clip gives the rest a third more bits. Use Cut & Merge.
- Use the efficient codec. Setting Priority to “Better picture, smaller file” uses HEVC or AV1 where your browser can encode them — noticeably sharper at 50 MB, but slower, and not every device plays them.
- Split long videos. Two 50 MB halves look far better than one 50 MB whole: Split Video.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video to 50 MB?
Drop the video above — the 50 MB target is preselected — and press Compress Video Now. The compressor chooses the sharpest resolution that fits, encodes the video, and checks the finished file is under 50 MB before giving it to you.
Where is 50 MB the limit?
Discord Nitro Basic raises the upload limit to 50 MB, and a 50 MB cap is common on website forms, job applications, school and course platforms, and support portals. GitHub also starts warning about files over 50 MB. Check the exact figure where you are uploading — if it is 49 MB or "under 50 MB", choose Custom and enter a slightly smaller number.
How long a video fits in 50 MB at good quality?
Around a minute stays at full 1080p, three minutes fit at a sharp 720p, five minutes at 540p, and ten minutes at 360p. The table on this page shows the exact choices for each length.
Can I keep 1080p?
For clips up to about a minute, yes — the compressor keeps 1080p automatically. For longer clips you can pin 1080p in the Resolution setting, but the picture will look blockier than the 720p the compressor would have chosen, because the same bits are spread over more than twice as many pixels.
My video is 500 MB. Can it really get down to 50 MB?
Yes. Phones record at very high bitrates — often 15 to 50 Mbps — to leave room for editing. Most of that is not visible on a phone or laptop screen, so a tenfold reduction is normal for a clip of a few minutes. The table shows the resolution you can expect for each length.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using your device's hardware video encoder. The video never leaves your device until you upload the finished file yourself.
