How to resize a video
Drop a video above and choose a resolution. Presets keep the video's own proportions: pick 720p and a 1920 × 1080 landscape clip becomes 1280 × 720, while a 1080 × 1920 portrait clip becomes 720 × 1280. For an exact size — say 1080 × 1350 for an Instagram portrait post — choose Custom, untickKeep proportions and type both numbers. The readout shows the old and new size before you start.
Common resolutions
| Name | Landscape size | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K UHD) | 3840 × 2160 | Large TVs, archiving, footage you will crop into later |
| 1440p (QHD) | 2560 × 1440 | High-resolution monitors, YouTube uploads that keep extra sharpness |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 1920 × 1080 | The default for YouTube, social media and most screens |
| 720p (HD) | 1280 × 720 | Phones, email, web embeds, smaller files that still look sharp |
| 480p (SD) | 854 × 480 | Slow connections, messaging apps, previews |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | The smallest watchable size; thumbnails and very tight limits |
Fit, fill or stretch
When the new width and height have a different shape from the video, something has to give. Fitscales the whole picture to fit inside the new frame and fills the gap with black bars — nothing is lost.Fill scales the picture until it covers the frame completely and trims whatever spills over the edges, so there are no bars but the edges are cut. Stretch forces the picture to the exact size, which makes people look wider or thinner; it is rarely what you want, but it is there for the cases that need it. For vertical social video specifically, Change Aspect Ratio adds a fourth option: fitting the frame over a blurred copy of itself.
Resizing to make a file smaller
A lower resolution is the single biggest lever on file size, because the number of pixels falls with the square of the height: 720p has 44% of the pixels of 1080p, and 480p about 20%. If what you actually need is a file under a certain size — 25 MB for an email, 20 MB for Discord — the Video Compressor is the better choice: it chooses the resolution and bitrate together and checks the finished file against your limit, or use the dedicated 25 MB page.
About upscaling
Scaling a video up makes the frame bigger, not sharper. Detail that the camera never captured cannot be recovered, so a 480p clip resized to 1080p looks like a soft 480p clip — in a file several times larger. It can still be useful when a platform or editor insists on a minimum resolution, which is why the option exists, but the page warns you before doing it.
Every resized video is encoded as H.264 MP4 with your device's hardware encoder, and the sound is kept. Widths and heights are rounded to even numbers, which all video codecs require.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change a video's resolution?
Drop the video above and pick a height such as 1080p, 720p or 480p — the width follows automatically so the picture keeps its shape. For an exact size, choose Custom and type the width and height in pixels. Press Resize video and download the MP4.
What happens if the new size is a different shape?
With a custom width and height that do not match the video's proportions, you choose how to fit it. Fit adds black bars so nothing is cut off, Fill zooms in and trims the edges so there are no bars, and Stretch squeezes the picture to the exact size, which distorts it.
Does resizing make the file smaller?
Scaling down to a lower resolution usually does, because there are fewer pixels to store — 720p has less than half the pixels of 1080p. If your goal is a particular file size, such as 25 MB for email, the Video Compressor is the better tool: it picks the resolution and bitrate together to hit the size exactly.
Can I upscale a video to 4K?
You can choose a larger size and the video will be scaled up, but upscaling cannot add detail that was never recorded — a 720p video at 4K looks like a soft 720p video, in a much bigger file. The tool warns you before upscaling.
Can I resize several videos at once?
Yes. Choose several files and each is resized to the chosen height, keeping its own proportions, or to the exact custom size. Download them one at a time or as a ZIP.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Resizing runs in your browser using your device's video hardware. The file never leaves your device.
