How to compress a video for Discord
Drop your video into the box above. The target is already set to 19 MB, just under Discord's free limit, so you can press Compress Video Now straight away; the plan underneath shows the resolution and quality it will use before you start. When it finishes, play the result, check the size, and download it. If you have Nitro, choose Custom and enter 49 (Nitro Basic) or 490 (Nitro) instead.
Discord's upload limits
| Account | Limit per file | Enter here |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 20 MB | 19 (already set) |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | 49 |
| Nitro | 500 MB | 490 |
Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB on August 13, 2026. Many "Discord compressors" — and the 8 MB ones from before 2024 — still aim far lower, which throws away more than half the quality you are allowed. The limits, the history and why some files under 20 MB still fail are covered in our guide to theDiscord file size limit.
What fits in 20 MB
Nineteen megabytes is about 160 megabits, and it has to cover every second of picture and sound. How good the result looks depends mostly on how long the clip is. This is what the compressor chooses for a typical 1080p phone or screen recording:
| Clip length | Resolution | Video | Sound | Expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 seconds | 1080p | 10,285 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 30 seconds | 1080p | 5,079 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 1 minute | 720p | 2,475 kbps | 128 kbps | Sharp |
| 2 minutes | 540p | 1,174 kbps | 128 kbps | Good on phones |
| 3 minutes | 360p | 740 kbps | 128 kbps | Watchable, soft |
| 5 minutes | 270p | 457 kbps | 64 kbps | Watchable, soft |
Up to a minute stays sharp; up to two looks good on a phone, which is where most Discord clips are watched. For anything longer, trim it to the part worth sharing, orsplit it into several pieces and send each one. Halving the length roughly doubles the quality you can afford.
Why it does not come back at 20.4 MB
The usual way to "compress to a size" is to divide it by the duration and hand the encoder that bitrate. Encoders treat a bitrate as a target, not a promise, so the file often lands a few percent over and Discord rejects it. This compressor sets aside room for the sound and the file's own structure first, gives the picture only what is left, then weighs the finished file. If it is over, it re-encodes with a corrected budget — up to four passes — so the file you download fits. If a clip is too long for any watchable picture to fit, it tells you instead.
Game clips and screen recordings
Clips from OBS, ShadowPlay or the Xbox Game Bar are often 60 fps and recorded at a high bitrate. At a 20 MB budget the compressor lowers the resolution before it starves each frame, because a clean 720p clip looks better in a Discord embed than a blocky 1080p one. If your recorder saved a WebM or MKV, drop it in as it is — the output is an MP4 that plays inline on desktop and mobile.
Why it runs in your browser
Online compressors upload the whole video, compress it on a server and send it back — slow for a large recording and a privacy risk for anything personal. This one uses your device's own hardware video encoder, so a 200 MB clip never has to travel anywhere, and there is no watermark, sign-up or file-count limit.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video for Discord?
Drop the video above and press Compress Video Now. The target is already set to 19 MB, just under Discord's 20 MB free limit. The tool picks the resolution and bitrate that fit, weighs the finished file, and re-encodes it if it came out over, so the file you download uploads without Nitro.
What is Discord's file size limit?
20 MB per file on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 500 MB with Nitro. Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB on August 13, 2026, so compressors that still aim for 8 or 10 MB throw away half the quality you are allowed.
Why 19 MB and not 20?
Devices disagree about what a megabyte is. Windows counts 1,048,576 bytes, macOS and phones count 1,000,000, so a file that reads as 20 MB on one can be over the limit on Discord. 19 MB here is under 20 MB by either count.
How long a video can I send on Discord without Nitro?
About 30 seconds fits at full 1080p and a minute at 720p. Two minutes still looks good on a phone at 540p. Past three minutes the picture gets soft, so trim or split the clip instead. The table on this page shows exactly what the compressor chooses for each length.
I have Nitro. Can I use this?
Yes. Choose Custom and enter 49 for Nitro Basic, or 490 for Nitro. A bigger budget means a sharper picture, so always compress to just under your own limit rather than the free one.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser with your device's hardware video encoder. The video never leaves your device until you attach it in Discord.
