How to split a video
Drop a video above and choose one of three ways to split it. The list underneath shows every piece with its start, end and length before anything is processed, so you can adjust the numbers until it looks right.
- Every … seconds — fixed-length pieces, for platforms with a per-clip limit. A five-minute video split every 60 seconds gives five one-minute clips.
- Into … equal parts — the same length each, whatever the total. Useful for sharing a long recording in manageable chunks or dividing a lecture into sections.
- At specific times — cut wherever you like. Type times such as
1:05, 2:40, 4:12.5; play the preview to find the moments.
Splitting for social platforms
Story and status formats cap how long a single clip can be, so a longer video has to be posted in pieces. Splitting into pieces of exactly the limit keeps each one as full as possible, and the files are numbered in order —clip_part01.mp4, clip_part02.mp4 — so they are posted in sequence. Limits change from time to time; check the current one in the app you are posting to and type it in.
Why the cuts are exact
Compressed video is built around keyframes — complete pictures stored every second or few — with the frames between them stored as changes. A quick "lossless" splitter can only cut at keyframes, so a piece meant to start at 1:00 might really start at 0:58 and repeat the end of the previous piece. This tool re-encodes each piece from exactly its cut point instead, so consecutive pieces meet on the right frame with nothing duplicated and nothing missing. Re-encoding uses your device's hardware encoder at a high quality setting, and the sound is kept in every piece.
Splitting, cutting and merging
Splitting keeps every part of the video and divides it up. If you only want one section and to throw the rest away,Cut & Merge trims a single range more directly — and can join pieces back together, so you can split a video, edit one piece (for examplechanging its speed), and reassemble it. If the pieces need to fit under an upload limit as well, run them through theVideo Compressor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a video into parts?
Drop the video above and choose how to split it: into pieces of a fixed length (for example every 30 seconds), into a number of equal parts, or at exact times you type in. The list of pieces is shown before you start. Press Split video, then save each piece or download them all as a ZIP.
How do I split a long video for WhatsApp Status or Instagram Stories?
Choose Every and enter the platform's per-clip limit — at the time of writing, 60 seconds for both WhatsApp Status and Instagram Stories. Each piece comes out at that length, numbered in order, ready to post one after another. Limits change, so check the app if a piece is rejected.
Are the cuts exact?
Yes. Each piece is re-encoded starting exactly at its cut point, so pieces start and end on the frame you asked for rather than jumping to the nearest keyframe a second or two away. Played back to back, the pieces add up to the original with nothing missing or repeated.
What happens to a tiny leftover at the end?
If splitting every 30 seconds would leave a final piece shorter than a second — say the video is 90.4 seconds long — that sliver is joined onto the last piece instead of becoming a separate file.
How many pieces can I make?
Up to 200 from one video. Each piece is processed in turn, so long videos split into many parts take a while; keep the tab open and in front while it works.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Splitting happens in your browser; the video and its pieces never leave your device.
