Why PNG for PDF pages

Most PDF pages are text and line art: hard black edges on a flat white background. That is exactly what PNG is built for. It compresses without throwing anything away, so the letters in your image are exactly the pixels the renderer drew, with none of the soft halo JPG leaves around sharp edges. For a contract clause in a slide, a chart in a report or a page of documentation, PNG is the format that still looks crisp when someone zooms in.

When JPG is the better choice

PNG's weakness is photographs and scans, where every pixel differs slightly from its neighbour and lossless compression has little to work with — a scanned page can come out five to ten times larger as PNG. For those, switch the format to JPG here, or use PDF to JPG, which starts there.

Resolution and file size

The DPI setting is how many pixels make up each inch of the printed page. An A4 page is about 1,240 × 1,754 pixels at 150 DPI and 2,480 × 3,508 at 300. Doubling the DPI quadruples the pixels, and for PNG roughly quadruples the file. The size line under the resolution choice estimates the result before you convert, and warns when a long document at print resolution is heading for a download measured in hundreds of megabytes.

What is rendered

The images match what a PDF viewer shows: page rotation and cropping are applied, fonts are drawn from the file, and form fields and annotations appear as they would on screen. The page is rendered on white rather than a transparent background. To turn images back into a PDF, use Images to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to convert it to PNG?

No. Your browser draws each page into an image itself, with pdf.js, the PDF engine built into Firefox. Nothing is sent to a server, so confidential documents stay on your device.

Why choose PNG instead of JPG?

PNG is lossless: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, lines and charts keep perfectly sharp edges with no blur or speckle around them. That makes it the better choice for pages of text, diagrams and screenshots for documentation. JPG makes smaller files and suits scans and photos.

Does the PNG have a transparent background?

No — pages are rendered on white, the way they look in a PDF viewer. A transparent page would show its black text on black in any dark-mode image viewer or chat app, which is rarely what anyone wants.

Can I convert only some pages to PNG?

Yes. Every page starts selected; click thumbnails to deselect them, or type pages such as 2-4, 9 into the Pages to convert box. One page downloads as a PNG, several as a ZIP of PNGs named in page order.

What DPI should I use for PNG?

150 DPI for screens, slides and documentation. 300 DPI when the image will be printed or when you need to zoom into fine print. PNG files grow quickly with resolution, so 300 DPI pages of a long document can add up to hundreds of megabytes.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF to PNG?

Yes, if you know its password. Enter it when the tool asks and the pages render as usual. Files that only restrict printing or copying open without a password.
