How PDF to JPG works
A PDF describes a page as instructions — draw this text in this font, place this image here — and a JPG is a grid of pixels. Converting means running those instructions at a chosen resolution and saving what comes out. This page does that with pdf.js, the renderer built into Firefox, inside your own browser tab, so the result looks the way the page looks in a PDF viewer: fonts, rotation, cropping and all.
Choosing a resolution
DPI is dots per inch of the printed page. A US Letter page is 8.5 × 11 inches, so at 72 DPI it becomes 612 × 792 pixels — fine for a thumbnail or a quick look. 150 DPI gives 1,275 × 1,650, which is sharp on a laptop or phone and the right default for sharing. 300 DPI, 2,550 × 3,300, is print quality and the one to use when small print has to stay legible after zooming in. Each step up roughly quadruples the pixel count, and the file size with it.
JPG or PNG?
JPG compresses by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss, which is ideal for scans and photographs and makes for small files. Around sharp black text it can leave a faint haze. If your pages are mostly typed text, tables or diagrams and you want them razor sharp, switch the format to PNG — or use the PDF to PNG page, which starts there. To go the other way, Images to PDF turns JPGs back into a document.
Large documents
Pages are rendered one at a time so that a long document does not exhaust your device's memory, and the page shows its progress as it goes. Keep the tab in the foreground while it works: browsers pause drawing in background tabs. A very large page, such as a poster, is rendered at a lower DPI if the full one would exceed what a browser can draw, and the result says when that has happened.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to convert it to JPG?
No. The pages are drawn into images by your own browser, using the same PDF engine Firefox uses to display PDFs. The file is never sent anywhere, so it is safe to convert statements, IDs and contracts.
How do I convert just one page of a PDF to JPG?
Click Select none, then click the page you want — or type its number in the Pages to convert box. One page downloads as a single JPG; several download together as a ZIP, with each image also listed for downloading on its own.
What resolution should I choose?
150 DPI suits most uses: a Letter or A4 page comes out around 1,275 × 1,650 pixels, sharp on any screen and small enough to email. Choose 300 DPI to print the image or to zoom into fine text, and 72 DPI for the smallest files and quick previews.
Should I choose JPG or PNG?
JPG for scanned pages and pages full of photos, where it gives far smaller files. PNG for pages that are mostly text, line drawings or charts: it keeps every edge perfectly crisp, at the cost of larger files. Both formats are available from this page.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to JPG?
Yes, if you know the password. Type it when asked and the pages render normally. A PDF that only restricts printing or copying opens without asking.
Will the text in the JPG be selectable?
No. A JPG is a picture of the page, so the text becomes pixels. Keep the original PDF if you need to search or copy text, and use the image where only a picture will do — a slide, a social post, a form that only accepts images.
