Two problems, one tool

Most documents that need rearranging need it for one of two reasons, and the shortcuts here target both. A stack fed into a sheet feeder back to front comes out in exactly reverse order, which Reverse fixes in a single click rather than forty drags. A document fed in the wrong way round comes out rotated, whichRotate all fixes — twice for the 180-degree case, which is the common one. Everything else is dragging, and single pages can be rotated individually from the button in their corner.

Rotation does not redraw anything

Turning a page sets a property the viewer reads when it displays the page; the content underneath is untouched. That means rotating is lossless and instant no matter how large the page is, and it can be undone by rotating the rest of the way round. It also means text on a rotated page stays selectable and searchable, which would not be true of a tool that rasterised the page to turn it.

Why thumbnails appear gradually

Each page is rendered to an image in your browser. Doing that for every page simultaneously is quicker on a ten-page file and will exhaust memory on a two-hundred-page one, since every render in flight holds a full-size canvas — on a phone that means the tab is killed rather than slowed. So pages render one at a time and fill in as they finish. You can start dragging immediately; the ordering does not wait for the pictures.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to reorder it?

No. The document is read into your browser tab, the thumbnails are rendered there, and the rearranged file is built there too. Nothing is sent to a server at any point.

How do I move a page?

Drag its thumbnail to where you want it and the rest shift to make room. There are also two shortcuts worth knowing: Reverse flips the whole document, which is the quickest fix for a stack scanned back to front, and each page has a rotate button in its corner.

Can I rotate pages as well as reorder them?

Yes. The button in the top-left of each thumbnail turns that page 90 degrees clockwise; click it repeatedly to go further. Rotation is stored as a page property rather than by re-rendering the page, so nothing is redrawn and no quality is lost.

My scanner produced every page upside down. Can I fix them all at once?

Use Rotate all, which turns every page by the same amount. Two clicks gives you 180 degrees, which is the usual fix for a document fed in the wrong way round.

Why does it take a moment to show thumbnails for a long document?

Each page is rendered to an image in your browser, one at a time. Rendering them all at once would be faster on a short file and can exhaust memory on a long one, so they fill in progressively — you can start dragging before the last ones appear.

What is lost when pages are rearranged?

Bookmarks are not carried into the new document. Internal links that pointed at a specific page may now point somewhere unexpected, since the page they referenced has moved. Page content itself, along with annotations and external links, is preserved exactly.
