Numbering a PDF the way a reader expects

Most documents want one of two things: a plain number centred at the foot of the page, which suits reports and manuscripts, or “Page 3 of 12” in a corner, which suits contracts and anything printed and handed round, because a missing page is obvious. Both are here, along with the compact “3/12”. The preview is drawn from the real output, so what you see is what downloads.

Covers, chapters and the “of N”

A cover or title page is conventionally left unnumbered, and “Skip the first page” does that: numbering starts on the second page. The start number lets a document continue where another left off — an appendix that begins at page 37, say. Either way, “of N” is the last number actually shown, so the final page always reads “Page N of N” and the count matches what the reader can see.

Landscape and rotated pages

A PDF page can be stored one way round and displayed another; scanners and phones often save landscape pages as sideways portrait pages with a rotation flag. Numbers are positioned on the page as it is displayed and turned to match, so they land along the edge you see and read upright, on every page, whatever mix of orientations the document has. Cropped pages are numbered within the visible area rather than the hidden margin.

What is added

Each number is real text in Helvetica, drawn on top of the page. Nothing already there is moved or redrawn, so the rest of the page is untouched. If a number collides with a footer already on the page, move it to another position or further from the edge.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to add page numbers?

No. The numbers are drawn onto the pages inside your browser tab and the numbered file is handed straight back as a download. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I start numbering on page 2, or leave the cover unnumbered?

Tick “Skip the first page”. The cover gets no number and the next page starts at your start number, so a ten-page report with a cover reads 1 to 9. If the cover should still count as page 1, so the page after it reads 2, tick the box and set the start number to 2.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the start number to anything from 0 up. That is useful when a chapter or appendix is a separate file that has to continue the numbering of the one before it — set it to 37 and the first page reads 37.

What does N mean in “Page 1 of N”?

The last page number shown. Normally that is the page count, but with the cover skipped it is one fewer, and with a start number of 37 it is 36 more — so the last page always reads “Page N of N”.

Will the numbers be right on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. Numbers are placed on the page as it is displayed, so a landscape page — including a scan stored as a sideways portrait page — is numbered along its visible bottom edge, reading the right way up. Pages that have been cropped are numbered inside the visible area.

Do page numbers change the text already on the page?

No. The numbers are added on top of each page as new text; nothing underneath is moved, re-compressed or rasterised. The numbers are real text, so they can be searched and selected like the rest of the document.
