Comprehensive Image Analysis: What Every Metric Means
Whether preparing graphics for web delivery, validating photographic assets for offset printing, or auditing images for privacy compliance, understanding image properties is essential:
1. Dimensions vs. DPI for Print & Web
Digital displays render raw pixels directly, meaning DPI (dots per inch) does not alter how large an image looks on a monitor. However, for physical print (magazines, posters, business cards), DPI determines print size. A 3000×2400 pixel image printed at 300 DPI yields a crisp 10×8 inch photo print. At 150 DPI, it stretches to 20×16 inches with noticeable softening.
2. Aspect Ratios & Social Previews
Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between width and height. Standard ratios include 16:9 (HD video and banners), 9:16 (Instagram Reels and TikTok), 4:3 (iPad and legacy photography), 3:2 (standard 35mm DSLR photography), and 1:1 (square avatars).
3. Color Palette & Dominant Tone Extraction
Extracting quantized color palettes allows designers to build cohesive website themes, background accents, and complementary UI buttons directly inspired by key visual assets. Our analyzer extracts dominant color swatches, calculates percentage coverage, and converts values to CSS HEX, RGB, and HSL.
4. EXIF Metadata & Privacy Implications
Digital cameras and smartphones embed detailed Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) data into photos. This includes exposure settings, lens types, timestamps, and exact GPS coordinates. If you publish photos online, stripping this metadata using our companion EXIF Remover is recommended for privacy.
Frequently Asked Questions
What image formats can I analyze with this tool?
You can analyze JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, BMP, and AVIF formats. All inspection occurs 100% locally in your web browser using the HTML5 Canvas and binary ArrayBuffer APIs without any network uploads.
How does the color palette and dominant color extraction work?
The analyzer renders your image to an offscreen canvas and samples pixels into 4-bit quantized color buckets (4,096 bins). It calculates the frequency of each color group, sorts them by prevalence, and extracts the top dominant colors along with HEX, RGB, HSL values and percentage coverage.
Are my images uploaded to any server or cloud?
No. Your images never leave your computer or phone. All computations, binary EXIF parsing, and color extraction occur inside your browser memory for maximum privacy and zero latency.
What EXIF data and DPI information can be extracted?
For photos with EXIF or JFIF headers, the tool extracts camera make and model, lens details, shutter speed, aperture f-number, ISO sensitivity, focal length, capture timestamp, and GPS coordinates with interactive map links. It also determines embedded DPI and calculates physical print dimensions.
How is the estimated compression ratio calculated?
The compression ratio compares the uncompressed 32-bit RGBA bitmap footprint (width × height × 4 bytes) against the actual compressed file size on disk. It also computes bits-per-pixel (bpp) and the total storage savings percentage.
