Why can't I open HEIC photos on Windows or online?

Apple introduced HEIC as the default iPhone camera format in iOS 11. The format is more efficient than JPEG β€” the same visual quality at roughly half the file size β€” but most Windows apps, Android devices, and websites don't support it natively. Converting to JPEG makes your photos universally compatible without quality loss at a reasonable quality setting.

How does the browser convert HEIC without a server?

This tool uses heic2any, a WebAssembly port of libheif β€” the same open-source library used by GNOME, VLC, and others for HEIC decoding. The WebAssembly binary runs inside your browser tab, decodes the HEIC bitstream to raw pixel data, and then uses the Canvas API to export the result as JPEG. No network request is made for your photos.

FAQs

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default iPhone photo format since iOS 11. Half the size of JPEG at comparable quality, but not universally supported.

Why does it take a moment to start?

The first use downloads a small WebAssembly decoder (~350 KB). Subsequent conversions in the same session are instant.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The decoder runs in your browser. No photo data leaves your device.

Are HEIF files also supported?

Yes. HEIC and HEIF are the same format. Both are decoded by the same library.
