How does browser-based background removal work?
This tool uses @imgly/background-removal, which packages the IS-Net image segmentation neural network as a WebAssembly module via ONNX Runtime. When you click "Remove Background", the model analyses your image pixel-by-pixel to distinguish the main subject from its surroundings, then generates an alpha-channel mask. The Canvas API applies this mask to produce a transparent PNG. Your photo never leaves your browser tab.
Best results
Images with clear, high-contrast subjects (product shots on a white background, portraits against a plain wall) produce the cleanest masks. Scenes with transparent or translucent subjects, hair with fine strands, or subjects that blend into the background may show rough edges. For professional use, the output can be refined in any image editor afterward.

How does it work without a server?
The IS-Net segmentation model is compiled to WebAssembly and runs via ONNX Runtime in your browser tab. No photo data is transmitted anywhere.
Why is the first use slow?
The AI model (~95 MB) is downloaded once and cached. After that, every removal is fast.
Is the output transparent?
Yes. A PNG with a full alpha channel. Overlay it on any colour or export it as-is.
What images work best?
Clear subjects with good contrast against the background — product shots, portraits, and objects with defined edges.
