Engineering High-Precision RAG: Chunking Strategies, Overlap & Sizing
1. The Trade-Off: Precision vs. Context Window
In production Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures, the chunk size setting directly governs two competing retrieval metrics:
- High Precision (Small Chunks: 128 – 256 tokens): The vector embedding captures a single atomic concept. The similarity search will accurately isolate exact keyword matches or specific definitions. However, when passed to the LLM, the chunk may lack surrounding nuance, necessitating parent-child document retrieval.
- Broad Context (Large Chunks: 512 – 1024 tokens): Preserves complete multi-step instructions, table headers, and complex code blocks. However, vector cosine similarity is diluted because the single 1536-dimensional vector must average together several disparate paragraphs.
2. Why Chunk Overlap Eliminates Boundary Truncation
Natural text does not organize its semantic meaning into rigid 500-token boundaries. Critical information—such as a cause-and-effect relationship, a conditional statement ("If the condition above fails..."), or a multi-line code function—frequently spans the arbitrary boundary between Chunk 1 and Chunk 2.
By configuring an overlap of 10% to 20%, the terminating sentences of Chunk 1 are replicated at the start of Chunk 2. This guarantees that any user query targeting the transitional thought will score a high cosine similarity match in at least one retrieved payload.
3. Vector Database Storage and RAM Formula
When deploying self-hosted vector engines (such as Qdrant, Milvus, or pgvector), in-memory RAM usage can be calculated with the following equation:
RAM (Bytes) = Chunks × Dimensions × 4 (float32) × 1.30 (HNSW Graph Overhead)For 50,000 document chunks indexed with text-embedding-3-small (1,536 dimensions), expected active RAM allocation is approximately 399 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Why is chunk size and overlap critical for RAG accuracy?
In Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), chunk size dictates the granularity of information retrieved from a vector database. Chunks that are too small lack adequate surrounding context, while chunks that are too large dilute vector cosine similarity. Overlap (typically 10% to 20%) guarantees that thoughts, entities, or sentences spanning a split boundary are not cut off.
What chunking strategy should I choose?
Recursive Character Splitting (matching LangChain's RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter) is the industry standard for general prose and documentation, as it respects paragraphs and sentences before falling back to words. Markdown Header Splitting is optimal for structured technical documentation. Fixed-Token splitting aligns directly with embedding model context ceilings.
How many tokens should be in each RAG chunk?
For general question-answering, 256 to 512 tokens with a 10% to 15% overlap (25 to 50 tokens) offers the highest retrieval accuracy across models like OpenAI text-embedding-3-small and Cohere Embed v3. For deep summarization or legal analysis, 1,024-token chunks with 100-token overlap are preferred.
How is vector database storage and RAM estimated?
Vector storage is calculated as: Number of Chunks × Embedding Dimensions × 4 bytes (float32 precision) + 30% HNSW graph index overhead. For example, 10,000 chunks with 1536-dimension vectors require approximately 80 MB of RAM in databases like Pinecone, Qdrant, or pgvector.
Does this tool upload my documents to any server?
No. All text parsing, recursive boundary chunking, token estimation, and vector memory calculations run 100% locally in your web browser. Nothing is ever transmitted to an external server.
