Frequently asked questions
How is cumulative GPA calculated?
GPA is calculated by dividing total quality grade points earned by total course credit hours attempted.
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum those products, and divide by total credit hours. A 4-credit A (4.0) and a 3-credit B (3.0) give (16 + 9) / 7 = 3.57. Credit weighting is what separates GPA from a simple average of letter grades.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for honours, AP or IB courses - typically 0.5 or 1.0 extra point - so it can exceed 4.0. Many universities recalculate applicants' GPAs to their own scale, so a weighted figure is not directly comparable between schools.
How do I raise my cumulative GPA?
Each additional term moves the cumulative average less as total credits grow, so early grades are disproportionately influential and late recovery is slow. To raise a 3.0 over 60 credits to 3.2, you would need a 3.4 across the next 60 credits. Grade replacement policies for repeated courses, where offered, are usually the fastest lever.
