How the days between two dates are counted
The day count is the number of midnights you pass going from the start date to the end date. That includes the start day and leaves out the end day, which is why the same answer comes from subtracting one date from another in Excel or Google Sheets. It answers questions like "how many days until my deadline". When you need both ends counted, such as the nights plus one of a stay or the days of an event, tick Include the end date.
Weeks are exact: the day count divided by seven. Months are not, because a month is anywhere from 28 to 31 days. So the calculator counts the largest number of whole calendar months that fits between the dates, then the days left over. Adding that breakdown back to the start date always lands exactly on the end date.
Business days are the weekdays inside the same span. US federal holidays can be removed as well, using the observed dates, so a Saturday holiday comes off the Friday before and a Sunday holiday off the Monday after. State, school and company holidays are not included, so check your own calendar when a contract or deadline depends on it.
Hours are the day count times 24. A day that contains a daylight saving change is really 23 or 25 hours long, so for an exact elapsed time across a clock change, adjust by an hour.

How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Count the calendar days from the first date to the second. From Monday, October 5, 2026 to Friday, December 25, 2026 is 81 days. By hand, add up the days left in the start month, the full months in between, and the days into the end month, remembering that February has 29 days in a leap year. The calculator does this exactly for any two dates.
Does the count include the start date and the end date?
By default the count includes the start date but not the end date, so Monday to Friday is 4 days. That is the convention of most date calculators and of spreadsheet subtraction (=B1-A1), and it answers "how many days until". Tick "Include the end date" when you need both days counted, such as the length of a trip or a rental: Monday to Friday is then 5 days.
How are business days counted?
Business days are Monday to Friday within the same span as the day count. With "Exclude US federal holidays" ticked, any federal holiday that falls on one of those weekdays is removed as well, and the holidays removed are listed under the result. State, local and company holidays vary too much to assume, so they are not included.
Which holidays are excluded?
The 11 US federal holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after, following the Office of Personnel Management rule. Juneteenth counts from 2021, the year it became a federal holiday. Inauguration Day is left out because it applies only in the Washington, DC area.
How many weeks and months are between two dates?
Weeks are the day count divided by 7: 81 days is 11 weeks and 4 days. Months are counted on the calendar, because months vary from 28 to 31 days. The calculator finds the largest number of whole months that fits, then counts the days left over, so 81 days in this example is 2 months and 20 days.
How many days are in a year?
365, or 366 in a leap year. A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and the next leap year is 2028. Every count on this page includes leap days automatically.
