Frequently asked questions
How is body shape determined?
Body shape is determined by comparing ratios between bust, waist, and hip circumferences.
What are ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph?
They are the three somatotypes proposed by psychologist William Sheldon in the 1940s: ectomorphs lean and narrow-framed, mesomorphs muscular and broad-shouldered, endomorphs softer and wider through the hips. Most people are a blend rather than a pure type, which is why the classification is usually expressed as a three-number rating.
Is somatotype theory scientifically accepted?
Sheldon's original claim - that body shape predicts personality - has been thoroughly discredited. The descriptive vocabulary survived in fitness culture because it is a convenient shorthand for frame and fat distribution, but there is no good evidence that your somatotype determines which training or diet will work for you. Treat it as descriptive, not prescriptive.
Can I change my body type?
You can change your body composition substantially through training and nutrition, but not your skeletal frame - shoulder width, hip width and limb length are fixed in adulthood. So an endomorph can become very lean and a mesomorph can lose muscle, while the underlying proportions that drove the classification stay put.
