Frequently asked questions

How are SmartPoints calculated?

SmartPoints are calculated using calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein content of a food serving.

How are WW points calculated?

The current algorithms are proprietary and have changed repeatedly - from the original POINTS based on calories, fat and fibre, to PointsPlus, to SmartPoints weighting sugar and saturated fat, to the current Points system that also accounts for protein and unsaturated fat. Any third-party calculator approximates a published generation of the formula rather than reproducing the official one.

Why does this differ from the official WW app?

Because the official algorithm is not public and is periodically revised, and because WW personalises budgets by height, weight, age, sex and a food preference assessment. Use an estimate like this for rough comparison between foods; use the app for anything you are tracking against a real budget.

Does a points system work better than counting calories?

The evidence suggests structured commercial programmes produce modestly better adherence than unguided calorie counting, largely because of the structure and support rather than the arithmetic. A points system is a calorie deficit with extra weighting to nudge food choices - the underlying mechanism is the same.
