The muscle problem
BMI uses one formula for everyone — weight in kilograms over height in metres squared — and the WHO cut-points of 18.5, 25 and 30 are identical for both sexes. It does not ask your sex because the calculation does not use it. What changes between men and women is how to read the result.
For men the dominant failure is muscle. BMI measures mass without knowing what that mass is, and muscle is roughly 18% denser than fat, so a lean, heavily trained man routinely reads "overweight" and sometimes "obese" while carrying very little fat. Rugby forwards, powerlifters and many sprinters are technically obese by BMI, which tells you something about the metric rather than about them. The reverse also occurs: low muscle mass with a high fat percentage can sit comfortably inside the healthy band, sometimes called normal-weight obesity.
The practical response is to read BMI alongside a measure that knows where the mass is. Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio capture central adiposity directly, and theWHO waist threshold for substantially increased risk in men is 102 cm. If you train seriously or are notably sedentary, those figures will tell you considerably more than BMI does. Healthy body fat for men runs roughly 8-19%.

Frequently asked questions
Is BMI calculated differently for men?
No. It is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, and the WHO categories of 18.5, 25 and 30 apply to both sexes. Sex changes how the result should be interpreted, not the arithmetic.
Why does BMI say I am overweight when I am muscular?
Because BMI measures mass, not composition, and muscle is about 18% denser than fat. A heavily trained man frequently reads overweight or obese on BMI while carrying low body fat. Body fat percentage or waist measurement gives a far more useful answer.
What is a healthy BMI for a man?
18.5 to 24.9, the same WHO range that applies to women. At equivalent BMI men typically carry 8-10 percentage points less body fat than women, so the same number represents different composition.
What waist measurement should men aim for?
The WHO puts substantially increased risk at 102 cm and increased risk at 94 cm. Waist-to-height ratio is a simpler alternative — keep your waist under half your height.
Can I have a normal BMI and still be unhealthy?
Yes. Low muscle mass combined with a high body fat percentage can produce a BMI inside the healthy band while carrying elevated metabolic risk — a pattern sometimes called normal-weight obesity. BMI cannot detect it.
