Mid-market rate, and the spread you actually pay
The rate quoted almost everywhere — on search results, financial sites and converters — is themid-market rate, the midpoint between what buyers are bidding and sellers are asking on the interbank market. It is the honest reference rate, and it is also a rate no consumer receives. What you are offered is the mid-market rate plus a spread, and that spread is where most of the cost of currency conversion sits.
The spread is frequently invisible. A provider advertising "zero commission" or "no fees" is usually taking its margin inside the exchange rate instead, which can run several percent at airport kiosks and hotel desks. Comparing the offered rate against the mid-market rate is the only way to see the real cost — the headline fee tells you very little on its own.
Two things to watch when paying abroad. Card networks apply their own rate plus a foreign transaction fee, typically around 1-3% unless the card specifically waives it. And when a terminal offers to charge you in your home currency — dynamic currency conversion — declining is almost always cheaper, because the merchant's terminal sets that rate and builds in a markup well above what your own bank would apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the currency converter work?
It loads the European Central Bank reference rates, published each working day, when the page opens (the UAE dirham and Saudi riyal are fixed US-dollar pegs). If they cannot be fetched it falls back to a built-in reference table and says so. These are mid-market rates: your bank or card network adds a margin, so check their rate before acting on a figure.
Which currencies are supported?
Supported currencies include USD (US Dollar), EUR (Euro), GBP (British Pound), INR (Indian Rupee), JPY (Japanese Yen), CAD (Canadian Dollar), AUD (Australian Dollar), CHF (Swiss Franc), CNY (Chinese Yuan), SGD (Singapore Dollar), and more.
Is my currency conversion data uploaded to a server?
No. All conversions happen entirely in your local browser using client-side JavaScript. No data is stored or transmitted.
Can I swap the conversion direction easily?
Yes! Click the swap button (↔) between currency dropdowns to instantly invert the source and target currencies.
