Excel row limit: maximum rows and columns, and what to do with bigger files

Excel holds 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. What happens to a CSV that is larger, how to open it anyway, and the other Excel limits that bite first.

CSV Viewer CSV Column Filter

A single Excel worksheet holds 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns (A to XFD). That has been true since Excel 2007, and it is the same in Microsoft 365 today on both Windows and Mac.

The limit rarely matters until you open a large CSV export, and then it matters a lot, because Excel cuts the file off without much ceremony.

Excel limits at a glance

Limit Excel 2007 and later (.xlsx) Excel 2003 and earlier (.xls)
Rows per sheet 1,048,576 (2²⁰) 65,536 (2¹⁶)
Columns per sheet 16,384 (XFD) 256 (IV)
Cells per sheet about 17.2 billion about 16.8 million
Characters in one cell 32,767 32,767
Digits of number precision 15 15

The row limit is per sheet, not per workbook. A workbook can hold as many sheets as your computer’s memory allows.

To jump to the last row of an empty sheet, press Ctrl+Down Arrow (Cmd+Down Arrow on a Mac).

The two limits that bite before the row limit

15 digits of precision. Excel stores numbers with 15 significant digits. A 16-digit card number or a 19-digit order ID typed or imported as a number has its last digits replaced with zeros, and long numbers display in scientific notation like 1.23457E+18. Store such IDs as text. Our CSV to Excel converter keeps any value longer than 15 digits as text automatically.

32,767 characters per cell. Long JSON blobs, HTML or notes exported into one column are cut off at this length when the file is opened.

What happens to a CSV larger than the limit

A CSV file has no row limit of its own: it is just text, and exports from databases and analytics tools routinely run to several million lines.

When you open one in Excel:

  1. Excel reads the first 1,048,576 lines, including the header line.
  2. It shows a File not loaded completely warning.
  3. Every row after that is left out of the sheet.

Nothing tells you which records are missing, and saving over the CSV deletes them from the file. If you see that warning, close without saving.

How to work with more than a million rows

Look at the data without Excel. If you only need to inspect, search or sort the file, a viewer that does not load it into a spreadsheet grid avoids the limit. Our CSV viewer parses the file in your browser, pages through it, and lets you search and sort every row. Very large files are bounded by your device’s memory rather than a row count.

Cut the file down to what you need. Most oversized exports carry columns and rows nobody uses. Drop unneeded columns and filter rows (for example, country equals US or amount greater than 0) with the CSV column filter, then open the smaller file in Excel.

Use the Excel Data Model. In Excel for Windows, go to Data > From Text/CSV, then Load To… > Only Create Connection with Add this data to the Data Model ticked. The rows live in the Power Pivot engine instead of on a sheet, which can hold far more than 1,048,576 rows, and you analyse them with a PivotTable.

Split the file. Break the CSV into chunks under a million rows each and load each chunk on its own sheet. Fine for a one-off, awkward for analysis.

Move to a database. For repeated work on tens of millions of rows, load the CSV into SQLite, PostgreSQL or DuckDB. Our CSV to SQL converter generates the CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for smaller files.

Excel versus other spreadsheets

Program Size limit
Microsoft Excel 1,048,576 rows × 16,384 columns per sheet
Google Sheets 10 million cells per spreadsheet, across all tabs
LibreOffice Calc (7.4 and later) 1,048,576 rows × 16,384 columns per sheet

Google Sheets counts cells rather than rows, so the more columns you have, the fewer rows fit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum number of rows in Excel?

1,048,576 rows per worksheet, which is 2 to the power of 20. The limit is the same in Excel for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010 and 2007, on Windows and Mac. Older .xls workbooks from Excel 2003 and earlier were limited to 65,536 rows.

What is the maximum number of columns in Excel?

16,384 columns per worksheet, ending at column XFD. The legacy .xls format allowed 256 columns, ending at IV.

What happens if I open a CSV with more than 1,048,576 rows in Excel?

Excel shows a 'File not loaded completely' warning and loads only the first 1,048,576 lines, header included. The remaining rows are not shown, and if you save over the CSV they are lost for good.

Can I increase the Excel row limit?

No. The limit is fixed by the file format and cannot be changed by a setting. To work with more rows, load the data into the Power Pivot Data Model, split it across sheets, or use a database or a tool built for large files.

How many rows can Google Sheets hold?

Google Sheets limits a spreadsheet to 10 million cells in total across all its tabs, rather than a fixed number of rows. A sheet with 10 columns can therefore reach about 1 million rows, and a sheet with 50 columns about 200,000.

How many rows before Excel slows down?

There is no fixed number. Plain values scroll comfortably into the hundreds of thousands of rows, but volatile formulas such as OFFSET, INDIRECT and TODAY, whole-column references, many conditional formatting rules and lookup formulas over full columns slow a workbook long before the row limit.
